With the main goal of reducing the high traffic congestion in Chennai Metro City, The ambitious Chennai Metro Project has been taken in 2 corridors covering a distance of 45 km.
Around 70 percent of the activities of the entire project has been completed. Chennai Metro planned to complete the entire project before July 2018.
In this scenario, Phase-2 of the Chennai Metro Rail Project has been taken up in 3 corridors covering a total distance of 105 km at a cost of Rs. 45000 Crores. The 3 sections to be covered under Chennai Metro Phase-2 are - Madhavaram to Siruseri via Mylapore, Madhavaram to Sholinganallur via Koyambedu and Perumbakkam, and Nerkundram to Vivekananda Illam via Koyambedu.
The draft plan for the project is completed. The state government of Tamil Nadu has taken the efforts to get approval for this project from the central government.
The Metro Rail officials explained in this regard that Metro Rail Services are essential in large Metro cities like Chennai to reduce pollution and traffic congestion. The complete study and draft of the Metro Rail 2nd Phase have been completed and submitted to the Sate government.
Once the central government approval is obtained, funds will be procured from Japanese Financial Company and the project activities will commence.
One essential feature of the Phase-2 is that about 80 percent of the distance will operate underground in order to overcome the difficulties faced in acquisition of lands for the project.
Sufficient priority was not accorded to the car parking facility for the Phase-1 of the Metro Rail Project. However, this aspect will be well taken care of in the Phase-2 Metro Rail Project. Further, amenities for food, shopping, and entertainment malls will be provided in all important railway stations where a large number of people will pass through in Phase-2 Metro Rail Project.
