New Scheme implemented in Tamil Nadu: Application online for driving license

The facility to apply online for drivers license has been implemented throughout the state of Tamil Nadu from 1st March. This provision has been initiated as a measure to prevent middlemen or brokers and also to remove the issue of fake licenses.

There are 63 Regional RTOs (Road Transport Office) in Tamil Nadu. Apart from this, there are more than 60 Unit Offices. More than 3000 individuals obtain driving licenses daily from these offices. An average of 6210 individuals registers their new vehicles.

Registering new vehicles and making corrections or changes in the name of the owners of Autos are also the other activities performed in RTOS.

The central Ministry of Highways has been initiating various measures to prevent the issue of fake driving licenses and also to improve the system procedure in issuing licenses.

As a part of this effort, the step of introducing the facility for online applications for obtaining the drivers` license, eligibility certificate, payment of vehicle tax, registration of new vehicles, and collection of various charges.

In this scenario, the system of applying only online to obtain driver`s license has been implemented throughout the state of Tamil Nadu.

The officials from the RTOs explained further that a number of measures are being implemented throughout the country to improve the functioning of RTOs. This has been implemented with the main objective of totally eliminating the existing maloperations of the issue of 30 percent fake driving licenses.

As per this new scheme, it is not any longer necessary to submit an application for obtaining the drivers license in the RTO offices. For this, the person has to apply online at the website: www.parivahan.gov.in/sarathi

After the online application, the RTO officers will call the applicant and verify all the certificates, and issue LLR (Learners Licence Rule) Once the practical training is completed in 6 months, the applicant has to demonstrate his/her driving skill and get the driving license.

This system was being tested in a few RTOs in Tamil Nadu earlier and now, it is being implemented in the entire Tamil Nadu.

In a similar procedure, activities like the issue of vehicle fitness proof, vehicle registration, change of address, payment of charges, and renewal of drivers licenses will be made online and the efforts for this will be undertaken from 15th March.
