With a demand to raise the rates currently given, the call-taxi owners and operators OLA and UBER cars have gone on strike.
OLA is operating 17000 cars and UBER is operating 14000 cars in Chennai Metro city for call taxi service in the Chennai Metro city on a contract basis.
Both OLA and UBER have recently started reducing the rates offered by them to the vehicle owners by a considerable margin.
In this scenario, more than 80 percent of the vehicle owners who have joined with OLA and UBER on a contract basis, have gone on strike for 3 days starting from yesterday (Monday, 6th March).
In this regard, The Chennai Metro City Vehicle employees Union explained to the press reporters that both UBER and OLA offered the vehicle owners of the call taxis about Rs. 11 per km of travel.
Presently, they are charging the customers Rs. 6/- per km and pay the taxi owners Rs. 4.80.
In the situation that the vehicle drivers and owners are severely affected by various issues such as payment of vehicle loans and rising petrol/diesel costs, this reduction in rates by OLA and UBER has caused a great loss.
The Tamil Nadu State government has fixed for the autos plying in the city The amount of Rs. 25 for the 1st 1.8 km and subsequently Rs. 12 for every km. If UBER and OLA make a similar arrangement for the rates offered, there would not be any situation for the vehicle owners to get troubled by the Corporate Companies.
A petition regarding this has already been submitted last year to the Commissioner of Police. We are planning to take siege of the Commissioner’s office.
The demanded rates:
For 4-seater mini-cars, Rs. 100 for the 1st 4 km and Rs. 17 per km for the rest.
For the cars carrying 4 passenger and luggage (Sedan type), Rs. 100 for the 1st 4 km and Rs. 19 per km for the rest
For the cars carrying 7 passengers and luggage, Rs. 100 for the 1st 4 km and the Rs. 22 per km for the rest.
Waiting charges should be Rs. 2 per minute. The night charges must be an additional 25 percent of the fare calculated.
