With the last northeast monsoon having failed miserably; in Tamil Nadu, the prices of vegetables started shooting up since the beginning of February. The price of tomato which was selling at Rs. 10/- per kg has now shot up to Rs. 35/- per kg.

However, in the present scenario, the prices of tomato, sambar onion, lady’s finger, bitter gourd, and snake gourd have gone down. At the same time, the prices of beans, carrot, and radish have gone up.

When enquiring about this development to the Koyambedu flowers, vegetables, fruits, shop traders’ welfare union administrator Mr. Sukumar, he explained that generally, beans and carrot arrive in large quantities from Karnataka. However, there were recent rains in Karnataka which reduced the quantity of carrot arriving at Koyambedu. So, beans which were earlier sold at Rs. 35/- per kg is now sold at Rs. 40/- per kg and carrot which was sold at Rs. 15 per kg is now sold at Rs. 22/- per kg. The price of radish has gone up from Rs. 8/- per kg to Rs. 12/- per kg.

Because of the drought conditions in a few districts including Theni, the quantity of drumstick arrival has also reduced. So, drumstick price has shot up from Rs. 13 per kg to Rs. 35/- per kg.

At the same time, due to an increase in the quantity of arrival, the price of tomato has come down to Rs. 25/- per kg, Sambar onion price has come down from Rs. 40/- per kg to Rs. 30/- per kg. The price of okra (lady’s finger) has come down from Rs. 45/- per kg to Rs. 30/- per kg.  However, this might just be a temporary phase. The prices of all vegetables are likely to go up by 25th March.
