The Tamil Nadu State Budget for the financial year 2017 is set to be presented today (Thursday, 16th March) in the State Legislative Assembly.
This will be the 1st budget presented after the death of the former Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa.
The State Finance Minister D. Jayakumar will be presenting the budget today. Again, this is the 1st budget after E. Palaniswami assumed office as the state Chief Minister.
Last year, Mr. O. Panneerselvam, the state finance minister at that time, had presented the budget.
As uncertainties and confusion prevailed in the ruling party AIADMK after the death of J. Jayalalithaa, the usually scheduled budget presentation in February got delayed and postponed.
The Chief Minister E. Palaniswami had initially taken the Finance portfolio and Highways Department. Later, Jayakumar took additional charge as Finance Minister along with his portfolio, Fisheries.
With the plenty of freebies and subsidies offered, the burden and the deficit of the state finance had increased considerably. The budget is set to be presented in this scenario,
Questions have arisen whether additional taxes will be imposed in order to have additional revenue for the state.
Meanwhile, the opposition party DMK has announced that it will bring a no-confidence motion in the assembly even after the assembly meets after the last session when confidence voting procedure was carried out.
So, there is an additional question whether the budget presentation would pass off smoothly.
