Lorry strike scheduled on 30th March: Prospects of vegetable prices going up

The Lorry Owners Association is planning to go on strike throughout the country from 30th March protesting against the payment of customs/tollgate charges.

The president of the Tamil Nadu State Lorry Owners Association, Mr Kumaraswamy, informed that 4 lakh lorries in Tamil Nadu will participate in this strike.

While addressing a review meeting on this, he informed that there are 363 customs/tollgates throughout the country.  In the Southern states of India, there are 117 customs/tollgates including 41 in the state of Tamil Nadu. Out of this 41 tollgates, the contract period is over in 26 tollgates, But they have been still collecting the toll gate charges. The Lorry owners association strongly protests this.

As the state government of Tamil Nadu has increased the VAT for diesel, 40000 lorries going to other states procure diesel from there. Hence, The state of Tamil Nadu is losing this revenue.

In the above situation, the Lorry Owners Association has planned to go on an indefinite strike demanding to withdraw the increased insurance premium, increased vehicle registration fee, the plan to sideline lorries which are more than 15 years old, and the recently added VAT on the diesel.

9.50 Lakh lorries will not ply in the South States. Because of this, daily trading of Rs. 600 Crores to Rs. 800 Crores will be affected. This will also upset the country’s production by 1.5 percent.

In this contest, there are prospects of the vegetable prices going up steeply following the lorry strike.
