The Southern Railway believes more commuters will start using the Mass Rapid Transit System soon after service road connecting Velachery-Taramani railway station will be ready by 2018.

Works to lay the service road had started in 2009. This runs parallel to the MRTS. The works were however stuttering due to chaos between the railway department and Chennai Corporation. At last, the Southern Railway had decided to carry out the project and the works began in full swing in 2015.

These works to lay the service road connecting Velachery and Taramani is scheduled to get over by March 2018, said a senior official of the Southern Railway. This covers a distance of more than 3.40 km out of which more than 50 percent works between Taramani and Perungudi are completed. Culvert construction to direct storm water drain network with the Pallikaranai marshland is on the go. And hence, a small part of the work is kept undone.

A lot of commuters use the Velachery MRTS railway station as it serves as a multi-modal transport. However, it lacks in having enough transport facilities. People find it wary to travel using Perungudi railway station owing to safety issues. When the service road is set up, it will be of great help, the passengers feel.
