A government order issued by the Secretary of the Tamil Nadu State Government Department of Education, Mr. T. Udayachandran, that an expert committee was formed for a review on the prospects of including the study of the 108 sections of the world famous Tamil Literary classic Thirukural in the syllabus for classes from 6th Standard to 12th Standards.
The expert committee has recommended and devised the syllabus to include the teaching of all sections of Thirukural except those in the chapter of ‘Inbathuppal’ and includes the chapters on Arathuppal and Porutpal for the moral education in the syllabus.
As per the recommendations of the expert committee, 15 sections each of Thirukural will be taught in the syllabus from 6th to 12th Standards from the next academic year 2017-18.
Thirukual, the great Tamil classic literature is known as ‘Ulaga podhumarai’ or the Global Moral Scripture.
The Directors of the State Academic Research and Training and the Tamil Nadu Text Book Committee have been advised to adopt modern methods to teach the various moral aspects as given in Thirukual through various approaches including moral stories, songs, cartoon stories and animated movies.
When enquiring about this to a higher official in the Department of Education, he explained that 15 sections of Thirukural will be taught in each class from 6th to 12th Standards.
