CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) has informed that NEET (National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test) for joining medical courses is being conducted on 7th May in 2200 centres throughout the country.
In the state of Tamil Nadu, it is conducted in 8 cities: Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Salem, Namakkal, Tirunelveli and Vellore.
There are more than 50000 seats available for joining medical courses (MBBS and BDS) in the government and Private medical universities and colleges, and Deemed Universities throughout India.
The candidates have to write NEET and pass to be eligible for admission. For the academic year 2017-18, NEET is scheduled to be conducted by CBSE on 7th May. 1135104 students have applied.
NEET is conducted in 10 languages including English and Tamil. Earlier, it was announced that NEET would be conducted in 80 cities all over India including Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem and Trichy.
Later, 23 mote cities have been added including Namakkal, Tirunelveli, and Vellore in Tamil Nadu for a total of 103 cities (2200 exam centres) in India where NEET will be conducted.
During last year, when NEET was conducted in 2 stages, 802594 candidates applied. Only 731223 candidates wrote the Test. It is to be noted that 71371 candidates did not write NEET.
The private medical colleges and Deemed Universities carried on with admission from the list of successful candidates in NEET. However, there were many complaints that there were a lot of irregularities and maloperations in this admission process.
Following this, the central government has ordered that the state governments should conduct counselling sessions through which the students can be admitted in private medical colleges and deemed universities.
