The city residents have been hit badly with the poor metro water quality and decrease in water supply. This may end soon, as the Chennai metro water is planning to replace all the drinking water pipelines aging more than 3 decades. This project is likely to get over by end of this year.

The drinking water supply network runs for about 4500 km. as a move to better the distribution, over 310 km of these pipelines are set to be replaced.

The total project estimate is Rs 116 crore sourced from the Infrastructure and Amenity Fund. Works to lay new pipelines are already on. It covers over 30 km distance at various localities.

There have been complaints about murky water at Vyasarpadi, Mylapore, T.Nagar and Purasawalkam. They also demanded replacement of pipelines.

Core areas of the city that have corroded or damaged water pipelines will be in focus for the project. Streets that still do not have pipelines will also be given focus. There will be extra feeders set up at the main pipelines to make sure there is unbiased water supply to all areas. The tail end areas will also thus receive enough water supply.
