More tankers to ply on city roads to meet demand for water

In a few weeks from now, there will be more number of tankers plying on roads to provide drinking water supply. Additional tankers are to be hired by the Chennai metro water department to cater to increased demand for water.

This will be helpful in catering to the gap in water supply, and the water agency can also meet the problems like risk of road accident and problems with unaccounted water. As the water resources are dwindling, it is likely that the piped water supply will get eventually reduced in the following weeks, and mobile tankers will come handy to meet the water needs.

As of now, there are 420 tankers make 5,700 trips every day. This count will increase up to 800 tankers. Tenders for the same are currently under process. There will be 7000 daily trips once the number is increased. The lowest price quoted for the trip to transport loads of water is Rs 60.

The city residents have placed a plea for the agencies to take stringent action to prevent increasing road accidents caused by water tankers. There should also be preventive measures for illegal water supply at busy filling points like MRC Nagar.
