The government affirmed its decision to mandate Aadhar cards for issuing PAN cards, claiming this as a move to curb fake PAN cards in the country.

To a bench comprising Justices A.K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan, Attorney General Mukul Rohatg said PAN card usage is doubtful because of ease of faking it. On the other hand, Aadhar is highly secure and reliable that can never be used for faking the identity of an individual.

The Attorney General further said that the Aadhar has helped the government save more than Rs 50,000 in different schemes that benefit the poor and other schemes such as pension schemes.

He further added that over 10 lakh PAN cards are cancelled, however there is no such complaint with the 113.7 crore Aadhar cards issued. There is not even one case of duplication that the government has identified. Aadhar is also effective in fighting terror funding and flow of black money.

The hearing will continue tomorrow. The AG further said Aadhar system is introduced with an aim of having a secure and robust system which can never be faked.
