Price of school notebooks is likely to uptick by 15 to 20 percent this year. Do you know why? The paper production is badly hit due to water scarcity in the state!
One of the paper machines of the Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) at Karur district has shut down functioning, the reason being water scarcity. On the other hand, Seshasayee Paper and Boards Limited is instructed to consume lesser volume of water for its paper manufacturing processes.
One of the Stationeries shop owner at NSC Bose Road says the reduced paper production in two of the major mills has affected the market. The price of one tonne of paper is raised from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 this year. The demand for notebooks will surge after reopening of schools. It is still uncertain whether we will be able to meet the needs, he added. Due to reduction in paper production, there is not enough paper supply. There is slash down of production by 500 tonnes. So, this will result in close to 15 percent price hike.
Furthermore, if drought prevails this year, there will be notebook shortage this year as well. Once the paper production begins in full scale, the scarcity will reduce and situation will calm down.
Classmate sells notebooks are sold at the same old MRP. The new arrivals from major companies are still awaited. After getting these arrivals, the price hike details will be known.
