Scorching sun hits fruit sales

Sun is showing its real face just like it does every year. This time, people are showing huge interest in eating a lot of fruits to keep themselves cool. However, the fruit vendors are seen pitiful because of poor summer sale.

Taking a closer look at the Koyambedu market in Chennai which is the Asia’s largest perishable market, it is seen that there prevails a wide gap between demand and supply of seasonal fruits such as mango and sweet lime.

The scorching heat is one of the primary concerns. There is a peak sale only during evening hours when the sun bids adieu. Most of the shoppers remain inside their home because of fear of facing the hot sun. Throughout the day, the fruit market looks void with all shops being almost empty.

Vendors claim extreme heat as the reason for the condition. Fruit sellers have observed a change in sales pattern of sweet lime in the present year because of reduced sales.

Sweet lime is sold for Rs 30 to 35 per kg whereas the class 3 and 4 sweet limes are sold for Rs 40-45 per kg.
