5.0 Magnitude earthquake hits Haryana, Tremors shake Delhi NCR

An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter Scale has hit Haryana during the wee hours of Friday morning. Tremors of the earthquake also shook Delhi-NCR and were strong enough to force people out of their house.

The quake of moderate intensity with its epicentre at Rohtak district in Haryana, with the depth of 22 km. The quake had struck around 4:25 am and tremors lasted for nearly one minute.

So far, no casualties or damage of to life and property has been reported.

India is prone to earthquake, particularly North and Northeast India. Country has witnessed some devastating earthquakes in the past years.

If reports from the United Nations and World Bank are to be believed, by the year 2050, more than 200 million people living in Urban India will be exposed to earthquakes. Nearly 54% of the land in India is prone to earthquakes.

India is divided into four seismic zones, namely, zone 2, zone 3, zone 4 and zone 5. Out of these zones, zone 5 is the most prone to earthquakes whereas, zone 2 has the lowest seismic levels.
