Second phase of Chennai airport modernization to start soon

Making an announcement about the second phase of modernization of Chennai Airport, the Chairman of Airports Authority of India (AAI) Guruprasad Mohapatra said it will begin by end of this year and will be done at an estimated cost of Rs 2,500. It will be carried out for about 3 years.
 
A global management consultant, AECOM has provided the blueprint for this modernization project, he added. The initial plan sent is now forwarded for AAI board’s approval. The aircraft movement will thus be increased from 32 to 40 in an hour. The passenger capacity will also increase from 18 million to 30 million.
 
Extra land is also sought for from the State government for carrying out developmental works at the below areas: 
  • Chennai – 200 acres
  • Coimbatore – 300 acres
  • Tiruchy – 450 acres
For this airside development, about 200 acres of land is required in Chennai. Construction of parallel taxiway at the northern side shall take place.
 
G. Chandramouli, the airport director said the approach light needs 15 acres and 62 acres is needed to construct parallel taxiway and constructing hanger.
 
The additional parallel taxiway shall make sure of lower runway occupancy time of flights.
