The Chennai Metro Rail Project officials informed that the tunneling and track laying work undertaken in the Anna Salai section will be completed by this September.

The Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase-1 consists of  2 corridors covering a distance of 45 km. As the project progressed, a Russian Contracting Company, given the contract work between Saidapet and Nehru Park, was taken away from the contract as it could not finish the work schedule in time.

One of the country’s major construction company L&T, has been chosen to replace the expelled Russian company to complete the balance work in the section Saidapet to DMS. However, it must be noted that there was a stagnation in the work between the section DMS - May Day Park over the last 15 months. The work resumed during September 2016 and is in progress now.

The senior officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Project explained that the progress in the 2nd Phase of the section between Nehru Park and the Central Railway Station is in full swing. 80% work is now complete. It is expected that the public Metro service will start before the year end between the Chennai Central Station and Meenambakkam via Koyambedu.

The tunnelling and track-laying work in the Anna Salai section will be completed by September. After this, signals will be installed. It is expected that the public service in this section may commence after July next year.
