The news is gathered that the pay scales of 5 million central government employees are being revised as per the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission. This will be effective from July.

The proposals of the 7th Pay Commission were approved by the cabinet in June 2016 to revise the allowances and pensions. An overall increase of 23.55% was proposed. This includes 16% rise in salary, 63% of allowances and 23.6% increase in pension.

This revised salary will raise the burden of the ex-Chequer by an additional Rs. 84933 Crores. At the same time, the delay in approval has saved Rs. 40000 Crores since January 2016.

Out of the various allowances, the revision is maximum in the House Rent Allowance, constituting 60% of the revision. Further, the proposed increase of 24% will be revised to 27% in cities of the population over 5 million. The cabinet is set to take up the proposal by the end of June.
