Monsoon arrived over Kerala with a bang but the nearby state of Tamil Nadu remained rain-free. The state capital of Chennai too did not witness much rains. This resulted in steep rise of the mercury levels that settled close to 40°C in most parts of the state.
However, in the last 24 hours, isolated showers occurred over several parts, with some good showers over South and Coastal Tamil Nadu. Chennai too recorded isolated light rainfall along with thunderstorm.
Moreover, light to moderate spells is expected to continue over the state along with Chennai.
In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Wednesday, Parangipettai recorded 30 mm of rains, Madurai 19 mm, Kodaikanal 18 mm, Thanjavur 4 mm and Chennai 1 mm.
According to Skymet Weather, these rains were attributed to the trough that was extending from East Uttar Pradesh up to North Coastal Tamil Nadu. Due to this weather system, humid winds were blowing over the region, leading to the formation of convective clouds over Chennai and nearby areas and hence, rains occurred over Chennai and nearby regions.
As of now, the trough still persists up to South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining parts of North Coastal Tamil Nadu and thus light to moderate rains are expected to continue over parts of Tamil Nadu including over Chennai for the next 48 hours.
However, these showers will not be very intense and will not be widespread in nature. Moreover, a short- term relief from the prevailing sultry weather conditions over Chennai is anticipated as the temperatures may subside marginally.
