There are four kinds of highways in India. They are National Highway, State Highway, District Highway and Panchayaat Highway.

The trick lies with observing the kilometer stones that tell you the distance ahead to reach a specific location. You can identify the type of highway by looking at these kilometer stones, particularly their colors.
