The Give it up campaign kick-started for LPG subsidy will soon be introduced into Railway travel as well. Following the campaign success on gas subsidy, the government is eyeing to encourage passengers to forgo subsidy they receive on railway fares.
This scheme is likely to be launched in August, say recent reports. There will be 2 slabs of subsidy surrender which are 50 percent and 100 percent.
Indian Railways meets a loss of Rs 30,000 crore annually because of the 43 percent rail fare cost.
The flexi-fare system was adopted in the month of September. As per this, rates of Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto have seen 10 percent increase. There is 10 percent increase in fare with every 10 percent of berths getting booked. This indicates that with 30 percent sale of tickets, there will be 30 percent increase in ticket rates.
