The price of tomato has gone up like a rocket in several districts in Tamil Nadu. The tomato is sold at the rate of up to Rs. 100 per kg in the retail market.
Due to the severe shortage of rains, the growth of tomato over the last few months was greatly affected. So, the farmers had to resort to growing some other items like green chillies, brinjal, etc. This led to the shortage of arrival of tomatoes in the wholesale market, especially, from the various districts in Tamil Nadu.
Naturally, this shortfall led to an abnormal increase in the price. A few weeks back, the tomato was sold at Rs. 80 per kg, Presently, it is sold at Rs. 100 per kg.
It is gathered that the price of tomato has sky-rocketed in the districts of Kanyakumari and Ramanathapuram. Another point to be noted that the Bangalore tomato is not to be seen in the local markets in several districts.
