It was a tamely end to the governor of Reserve Bank of India Urjit Patel’s appearance before high profile parliamentary panel on Wednesday. This is because the committee couldn’t get any proper response from central bank about the volume of old currency deposited until 30th December 2016.
According to the sources, following a 3-hour long discussion, Congress MP Digvijay Singh was wondering if the center will provide details at least before the 2019 Lok sabha polls.
Sources further state that the members of parliamentary standing committee kept grilling Mr Patel to disclose details about the quantum of old currency available with the exchequer until 30th December 2016. It was on this date that was last for submit all demonetized currency notes, as announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8th November 2016.
He is said to have informed the members that works to count old currency notes is on the go. There is not any sort of clear picture about the available quantum of currency.
There was dissatisfaction expressed by various opposition members of the committee about the RBI’s stand.
Apart from Saturdays, all the other holidays are cancelled in order to carry out the counting works.
