With the recent heavy rainfalls in the last 2 days in the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur, and Kanchipuram Districts, the rainwater collected and reaching Chenmarambakkam Lake has increased. The lake water level has also gone up.
As the monsoon rainy season failed miserably last year, the main 4 drinking water reservoirs sullying Chennai metro city, Chembarambakkam, Puzhal, Cholavaram, and Poondi dried up completely. The state government has been taking a series of measures counter this acute water shortage. It has started distributing drinking water taken from rock quarries and agricultural wells to the city residents.
In this situation, it had started raining heavily, especially during the nights, in these districts. Due to the heavy rain, water has collected in the dried up water resources.
Before the rains, Chembarambakkam lake water level was 2.28’ and the capacity was 47 million cft. After the rains for the last 2 days, the water capacity has gone up quickly by 31 million cft.
Currently, the lake water level stands at 2.85’ and the capacity, 78 million cft. Now. Water is entering the lake at 253 cft. 10 cft of water is being sent to for agriculture and industrial units.
As water is presently taken from the rock quarries at Sikkarayapuram, no water is taken from the Chembarambakkam lake at present. So, there are chances for the lake water level to go up further. In case the rain persists, the water level in the tank will go up further.
