With Vinayaka Chathurthi scheduled for celebrations next month (August), various activities related to the festival including making idols of Lord Vinayaka in different colours, shape, decorations, and notions. The idols are made in Sengottai and Tenkasi.
Though Vinayaka Chaturthi is the main festival in Maharashtra and celebrated in a rand manner with huge idols of Lord Vinayaka made, special poojas performed, prayed and then taken later on processions, it has also become a trend in South India to celebrate with equal pomp. Large ‘Pandals’ are set up covering the entire street and install the idol.
In the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, covering the Nellai district villages of Sengottai, Tenkasi and nearby, the Vinayaka Chathurthi festival is celebrated in a grand manner every year.
