The enormous gap between the education and the employment in India has reached its peak recently which is very evident with the sudden downfall of filling percentage in engineering colleges. No state is an exception for this recent data of decrease in filling seats. According to the data by Lok Sabha held on Monday, the year 2016-2017 had a 54% (8.67 lakh seats of 16.07 lakh seats) of unfilled seats of many private engineering colleges including under-graduation and post-graduation categories.
The reports of chairman D Sahasrabuddhe, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) states almost 275 engineering colleges had already applied for a closure. Now according to the latest statistics, many engineering institutions closed down around 96,000 seats and there are 83 colleges fewer than the last academic year.
The states where there is a maximum number of vacancies are Himachal Pradesh (83%), Uttarakhand (74.23%), Haryana (73.32%), Rajasthan (69.68 %) and Uttar Pradesh (67.33%).
Tamilnadu tops the list with 1.55 lakh unfilled seats and has a most number of engineering colleges compared to other states (Tamilnadu- 526 Engineering colleges Maharashtra-380 and Andhra Pradesh-325)
Former Anna University Vice Chancellor M.Anandakrishnan reported that the students all around the country have come to a point of realizing the poor educational system by most engineering colleges which is of no use in developing their self and skills. The total number of jobs in the market are very less comparing with the number of engineering graduates coming out each year. He also stated 50% of these colleges should be permanently shut down or they can provide some other vocational courses that improves skill based education.
