After long, it seems that rain gods have finally bestowed over Chennai, as the city managed to get some spells of rains in the last 24 hours.
In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Wednesday, the Meenambakkam observatory recorded a good 36 mm of rainfall, while Nungambakkam observatory witnessed a mere of 3 mm of rain.
These rains can be attributed to a feeble trough that has developed over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining North Tamil Nadu Coast. With the presence of this trough, some districts of both the regions received moderate showers.
As per Skymet Weather, this weak trough is likely to persist over the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. Therefore, scattered rains will continue over Chennai, Puducherry and nearby parts.
Weathermen expect these short spell of rain during early morning and late night hours for the next 24 to 48 hours. Thereafter, the weather is expected to go dry and humid, but on and off patchy rains of brief duration will continue till end of the month.
At present, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry is rain deficient by 30%. The month of July remained mostly dry for Chennai. However there were a few occasions when the city recorded some good spells of rains. Otherwise mostly very light rains or traces were recorded that too on rare occasions.
