TRAI (Telecommunication Regulatory of Authority of India) has planned to introduce the portability of the set-top boxes used in the cable TV or DTH connections.
With this facility, the customer can change the operator without the need to change the set-top box. This facility is similar to the already prevalent facility for the cell phone users to change the telecom network provider without changing their cell numbers.
TRAI Chairman, Mr R. S. Sharma, explained that under the prevailing system of cable TV service if the customer needs to change this service provider, there is a need to buy another new set-top box.
This cumbersome procedure will be eliminated by the next year with the facility of portability in the set-top boxes.
A Bengaluru company has developed the latest technology to install the portability facility in the set-top boxes.
The new facility has been tested thoroughly and the result has been successful. Subsequently, TRAI has planned to discuss with all the DTH (Direct-To-Home) companies and the cable TV operators.
Presently, a set-top box costs Rs. 1700 to Rs. 2200. So, most customers do not prefer to buy a new set-top box after buying one and continue with the same cable TV provider though unhappy with the service.
Though the new set-top box will also be of the same price range, as it has the facility to change the cable TV service provider, the customers will be free to make their own choice of the cable TV service provider.
