Chennai has been bracing for some good rains from last many days. However, the city is able to record light spells only. Heavy rains have almost remained absent and far from occurring over the capital of Tamil Nadu. In fact, the month of July too went off with a dry spell with some light traces only.
However, in the last 24 hours, Chennai had recorded light spell of rains. The Minambakkam Observatory recorded 0.3 mm of rains. While the Nungambakkam Observatory in Chennai had failed to record any rains. Though the western part of the city had received few good spells particularly during the late afternoon and evening hours. In fact, the nearby regions such as Vellore also recorded light rains.
Within the span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday, the other districts of the state that had witnessed rains include Kodaikanal 22.6 mm, Madurai 22.3 mm, Parangipettai 16 mm, Dharmapuri 15 mm, Coonoor11.6 mm, Thanjavur 9 mm, Coimbatore 3.2 mm, Tirupathi 1 mm, and Vellore 0.9 mm.
However, Skymet Weather now reiterates that a trough is persisting along Tamil Nadu coast. Moreover, a cyclonic circulation is also seen over Lakshadweep Island.
In the wake of both these weather systems, Chennai is expected to receive scattered rains for the next 48 hours. These rains will mostly be during late afternoon or evening hours. In spite of these rains, the weather will remain warm and humid.
Additionally, by August 17, rains will reduce significantly over the area but isolated light spells in some parts of the city cannot be ruled out. The intensity of rains will be more in the interior regions of the state as in contrast with the districts of the coastal part of the state.
