The state of Tamil Nadu does not get much rain during the Southwest Monsoon season. However, there are few occasions when it receives good rain activity, but continuous showers are ruled out.

The reason being it lies in the rain shadow area. So, most parts of the state witness good spells in the Northeast Monsoon season. At present, Tamil Nadu is rainfall surplus by 36%.

These light spells can be attributed to the trough that is extending from Telangana to Tamil Nadu Coast. These rains are expected to carry on for the next 24 hours. Afterwards, the rains will take a back seat over Tamil Nadu and Chennai. Weathermen at Skymet Weather foresee good rains to return by August 25.

The monthly average rainfall of Gateway of South India, Chennai for the month of August stands at 126.8 mm, whereas till date the city has managed to receive 211.2 mm of showers. Therefore, it’s evident that Chennai has already surpassed its monthly average that too with a good difference.
