As per the latest initiative by the Tamil Nadu government, it will not be possible for one to buy or register for a new vehicle without holding license in their name. Bikes of capacity above 50 cc cannot be purchased just with learner’s license, mentions a statement from the department in a circular rolled out dated 24th August. This order will be applicable from the 1st of September.
A circular has been rolled out to the Regional Transport Offices and registered automobile dealers in Tamil Nadu. They have said not to sell out or register new vehicles if details of driving license are not furnished by the buyers.
The RTOs are bound to keep track of all the dealers functioning in their jurisdiction and make sure that no vehicle is delivered without registration. However, this rule has confused a lot of vehicle owners who don’t drive them. There are people who own a car, but don’t usually drive. With the implementation of this rule, it will not be possible to buy a new car.
On the other hand, the automobile dealers raise questions about the legality of the amendment. As per the Central Motor Vehicle Act, 988 which mandates license mandatory for buying a vehicle, there is no such provision being mentioned.
