While there are several questions being raised about the Aadhar card security, the UIDAI has introduced a new method to lock biometrics, thus preventing possible misuse.
There are a number of ways in which Aadhar is linked to our day to day things like payments, welfare schemes, IT services, and so on. So, it is imperative to safeguard our biometrics that help in authentication process.
The nodal agency handling Aadhar called the UIDAI has posted on Twitter stating that finger print and iris data and other biometrics of an individual can be locked using a new technique.
Here is the simple step to lock your biometrics:
- Visit the site https://resident.uidai.gov.in/web/resident/home
- Select Lock or Unlock Biometrics found under Aadhar Services along the right side
- This will take you to Lock or Unlock page. Here, feed your 12-digit Aadhar number and the security code where there are fields provided under Biometrics section.
- Your registered mobile number will be sent with an OTP. Feed this and enter login
- Now, feed the security code and click on Enable. Now, the biometrics will be locked. As per what the portal reads, it is not possible to use Aadhar based biometric authentication without unlocking biometrics
- Once you enable lock, you will get a congratulations message from UIDAI stating that the biometrics is locked. So, fingerprint or iris authentication will not be possible then
