Increased inflow at Chennai water reservoirs

Because of the recent persistent rains, the inflow of water in the catchment areas in the main water reservoirs of the Chennai Metro City, located at Cholavaram, Puzhal, and Chembarambakkam Lakes has increased.

As on day-before-yesterday (Saturday, 2nd September), 44 mm rainfall was recorded in the Cholavaram Lake area. 51 mm rain was recorded in Puzhal lake area. 35 mm rain was recorded at Chembarambakkam lake area.

Subsequently, the inflow of water to the Cholavaram lake is 35 cft per sec. The inflow of water to the Puzhal lake is 232 cft per sec. The inflow of water to the Chembarambakkam lake is 193 cft per sec.

The total capacity of all the reservoirs – Poondi, Puzhal, Cholavaram, and Chembarambakka – is 11057 million cubic feet. Presently, the combined amount of water in these 4 lakes is 349 million cubic feet. As compared to this, 2458 million cubic feet of water was available in the 4 lakes in the previous year.
