All the 4 reservoirs in the city seems to have got filled with enough water – thanks to abundance of rain showers in August. Residents in Chennai can be sure of water supply for the next 15 days. The metro water had to look for alternate water sources, as all the reservoirs turned dry in July.

The primary water sources in the city are the reservoirs in Chembarambakkam, Redhills, Poondi and Cholavaram.

Soon, water supply from these reservoirs shall begin, say metro water officials. Rainfalls are also likely this month. Let us wait for a while before drawing water from all these 4 reservoirs.

In August, the total rainfall recorded is the highest in the past 50 years. In Thiruvallur district, there are reservoirs including Cholavaram, Redhills and Poondi. Here, the total rainfall received is 45 cm. This is 24 percent above normal since June. There is 14 percent excessive rainfall recorded in Chembarambakkam reservoir, Kanchipuram.

On the whole, the total water level in these 4 reservoirs have got down lesser than 1 percent out of the total 11,000 million cubic feet capacity in July. The combined level of water was 0.4 TMC on Friday. This is 4 percent of the total capacity. Compared to previous years, the total reservoir capacity is 2.1 TMC which is 20 percent of total.
