Supreme Court Chief Justice Dipak Misra inaugurated the 2nd Light House of the Chennai Metro City (this lighthouse was very old and in a dilapidated condition and was taken up for renovation).
This 2nd Light House was originally built in the year 1840 at a cost of Rs. 60000 and a height of 161 feet. This old lighthouse functioned from 1st January 1844. After functioning for 50 years, the lighthouse was closed in the year 1894.
Subsequently, this old lighthouse was under the care of the Indian Archaeological Department as one of the old treasure items.
The lighthouse remained as such in the dilapidated condition. However, as a commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the Chennai High Court, this was taken up for a complete renovation.
The Supreme Court Chief Justice Dipak Misra, who participated in the 125th-anniversary celebrations of the Chennai High Court, inaugurated this renovated lighthouse on the special occasion today (Saturday, 16th September).
The central minister Ravishankar Prasad, Chennai High Court Chief Justice Indira Bannerji, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E. Palanisamy, and the Law Minister M. C. Sampath participated on the occasion.
