The Tamil Nadu state government has announced that Aadhar cards can be used as identities for marriage registrations.
The order states that along with the signature of the parents of the marrying couple and other documents already recommended as valid, Aadhar card is now being added as an identity proof for registering the marriage. However, Aadhar card cannot be deemed as proof of citizenship or residence.
While verifying the signatures of the marrying couple’s parents, it is better for the marriage registration office personnel to thoroughly check whether the names and the initials are the same as given in the ID proof documents.
In case the application states that any of the parents of the bride or bridegroom is dead, the staff should verify with the death certificates and attach the same to the record.
In case either the bridegroom or bride had already been married and lost their wife/husband as given in the applications, the concerned death certificate should be obtained and verified before registration.
