Ayudha Pooja impact - Steep rise in the prices of flowers and fruits

On the occasion of Ayudha Pooja, the prices of fruits and flowers shot up steeply in the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable/fruit/flower market.

In the market set up especially for the festivals, a coconut is sold at Rs. 10 to 25. The hangings made of coconut leaves (Thoranam in Tamil) are sold at Rs. 10 per bunch. Long plantain leaf is sold at Rs. 10 per piece. Pumpkin is sold at Rs. 50 per piece. Bunch of mango leaves for decoration is sold at Rs. 10 per bunch. A sheaf of basil leaves is sold at Rs. 10. Double plantain saplings are sold at Rs. 20 per pair.

Saamanthi flower (mums) were sold at Rs. 20 per length (muzham), Kadhambam at Rs. 20, jasmines at Rs. 10, and fire-cracker flower (kanakaambaram) at Rs. 20.

1 Measure of puffed rice was sold at Rs. 10. A measure of a mix of the split gram, flat rice, Nattu-sarkkarai, and puffed rice was sold at Rs. 25 per pack. Nattu-sarkkarai was sold at Rs. 100 per kg.

Sweet lime was sold at Rs. 40 per kg, apples at Rs. 100, a bunch of bananas at Rs. 60, and pomegranate at Rs. 100 per kg. Guava was sold at Rs. 50 – Rs. 75 per kg. 

A bunch of sugarcane was sold at Rs, 400. A single sugarcane was sold at Rs. 50.
