The Chairman of the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education), Anil Sahasrabudhe, has informed that there would be no entrance examination for joining engineering courses from the next academic year.

A National Conference was held in Chennai presided by G. Viswanathan, Chancellor of Vellore, VIT University, on the topic of the challenges being encountered by the engineering industry and the opportunities. This was organised on behalf of Indian Career Education and Development Council.

Participating in the national conference, Anil Sahasrabudhe, while addressing the gathering, informed that it AICTE does not have the responsibility to improve the quality and standard of the technical education offered in the engineering colleges and universities. The respective institutions only will have to undertake the necessary efforts for this.

A separate council, NAC will soon be created exclusively to check the quality and approve the standard of education offered in the academic institutions by the UGC (University Grants Commission).like NPA for the national quality council. The activities and performance of the academic institutions will be thoroughly monitored and quality approval will be given. Thus, AICTE will not approve the higher educational institutions functioning with the sole motive of earning profits,

Further, the engineering institutions which find a place in the National ranking of quality do not find a place in the international lists. This trend has to be changed and the prevalent quality of the engineering institutes must improve.

AICTE had announced earlier that all the engineering colleges where less than 30% of the students joined out of the available seats will be closed. Several companies and institutions have offered their opinions/suggestions on this. As per this, there is a plan to merge 2 or 3 engineering colleges as a single entity and also give the approval to convert the engineering college into an arts and science college.

The syllabus of the engineering colleges should be reviewed continuously and revised periodically. Apart from the basic subjects, the option to choose an elective subject and the opportunity to undergo technical training has been introduced.

For the next academic year, there will be no entrance examination (like NEET for medical courses) to join the engineering courses. We also observe that there are several major issues to be addressed and resolved in NEET. We are reviewing the same. Once a solution is arrived at for these problems, the possibility of entrance examination for engineering course will be taken up again and reviewed.
