After about 7 years of cordoning off the important regions of Anna Salai by the metro rail construction in Chennai city, thus leading to severe traffic, in the arterial stretch, the gridlocks will soon be a memory of past! There are going to be 2 tunnels to connect May Day Park and AG-DMS by the month of November. This will henceforth not need any space for machinery.
The 4-lane traffic is likely to get restored by end of December. On completing the tunnel work, the road space will not be required. However, in the other 5 underground stations, the works are likely to continue, said the Principal Secretary, Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, S. Krishnan. It may be that the base level concrete construction to construct track and signaling work will be done. This may take 9 more months approximately, said S Krishnan.
After restoring the four lane traffic, the bottlenecks of the city that are intersections along Teynampet, Nandanam and Spencer Plaza will have free-flowing traffic that connects to the other roads. Well ahead of restoring Anna Salai to its former state, there is substantial work with the metro rail. Removal of machineries on either sides of roads need to be done where station boxes will be built and lower tunnel boring machines will be closed too.
