Starting from today, the northeast monsoon is likely to hit the state, says Indian Meteorological Department experts.
The Director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre says there are 3 conditions needed to declare the onset of northeast monsoon. They are
· Withdrawal of southwest monsoon
· Easterly winds need to set in
· Widespread rain showers
On Wednesday, the IMD declared that the southwest monsoon has got withdrawn. Easterly winds have started blowing. However, the rain showers so far received are scattered.
In the coastal regions, the rainfall has started, but there is scattered rain showers elsewhere.
About 48 percent of the annual rainfall in Tamil Nadu is received between October and December months which is the northeast monsoon season. Chennai and other coastal districts mainly rely on the rains to beat the summer heat.
There will be normal northeast monsoon this year, says IMD sources as well as leading weather bloggers.
One of the weather bloggers says he had to wait until last moment to confirm normal monsoons in Chennai and Tamil Nadu on the whole. With this monsoon, all the water problems are likely to get solved. Surplus water will be there too, he adds.
