Chennai rains have become quite intense during the last 24 hours. Since the time of the arrival of the Northeast Monsoon, Chennai rains have only been light to moderate as far as the intensity is concerned. However, as a cyclonic circulation has been lying in proximity of the state of Tamil Nadu along with the activated Northeast Monsoon, rains have become quite intense throughout the state.
During the last 24 hours, the city of Chennai recorded three-digit rainfall to the tune of 116 mm. Adjoining areas of the city also recorded a few very heavy spells of rainfall.
Since yesterday, heavy downpours have been lashing the city due to which schools did not continue throughout the day. In fact, the bells were rung an hour before it should have been. These hefty rains continue until the early morning hours and only took a break now.
However, as weather reports suggest that hefty showers are expected to continue over Chennai for some more time, schools and colleges remain closed today. All schools as well as colleges in Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Puducherry along with Chennai are expected to remain shut.
Heavy traffic jam was observed in the city of Chennai as rains continued over the state capital throughout the day. Not only this, water accumulation was seen in areas including Kilpauk and Koyambedu. Traffic was also at a halt in T Nagar because a tree falling in Mambalam area.
During the next 24 hours, the city of Chennai and its adjoining areas are expected to witness moderate to heavy rains. Isolated spells of very heavy showers may also be observed.
