Child Welfare Committee (CWC) says that child beggary is prevalent in the city because of kind-hearted Chennaiites. Recently CWC received two kids, aged four and five, who were brought from AP by their mother for begging as she had learnt that begging was flourishing in Chennai.
The members of CWC told that child beggary cannot be eradicated if the public continue to encourage child beggars. “Though begging was banned in Chennai in 2010, it still continues because of public patronage.some childrens were saved from the begging business and they have placed them in a government home and told the mother to attend counselling as there are no stringent legal measures to eradicate child beggary.
CWC members told to us that Some of the children are forced to beg by their parents. Though we explain to them that the government has many schemes for poor children, they still prefer begging to make quick money.the officials should take necessary actions regarding the child beggars by their parents the parents whom forces their childrens into begging business should be punished.
