The Ambattur Lake that primarily has its outflow to the Adyar River is basically a reservoir. It is spread across a land area of 3800 acres with 16.55 Crores sq. ft. It caters to the drinking water needs of Chennai city with rain water being the prime source of supply.

Do you know that Ambattur Lake is not just a single lake by a spectrum of 3 different lakes: Ambattur Lake, Korattur Lake and Madhavaram Lake. When the water level reaches the threshold in any of these lakes, the supply will be transferred to the others. During northeast monsoon rains in November 2008, the lake attained the threshold, to note.

Generally, the lake is found dry in summer, as the city, in the past 6 years, has not been lucky enough to receive surplus showers during the season until November 2015.
