The price of small or sambar onion has shot up like a rocket in the market to an unprecedented high in history. In Chennai Metro, it is sold at Rs. 180 per kg.
Low yield is attributed to be the main cause for this.

Small onion is grown in Tamil Nadu in areas such as Udumalaipettai, Kangyam, Dharapuram, Mecheri, Thalaivasal, Aathur, Omalur, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Namakkal and harvested.

With the recent incessant rains in Tamil Nadu, the yield has been severely affected. Thus, the onion plants had gone rotten  Subsequently, the quantity of small onion sent to the market is greatly reduced. Another point of note is that only 20% of the yield is sent to the vegetable market for sales.

All these factors have led to a rocketing price rise of small onions. The demand for small onion has also increased to a new high. On ordinary days, a few months ago, the small onion was sold at Rs. 30/40/50 per kg. With the recent scarcity, it was sold at Rs. 100 per kg.

Now, this has shot up again and now, small onion is sold at Rs. 130 per kg. That too, this price is for the wholesale market. The retail price will be even higher. As per the information, on retail, the price of small onion is around Rs. 180 per kg.
