Homemakers in the city look irked as the price of eggs have raised up to Rs 5.05 on Tuesday. This is the highest ever, say homemakers. The rate in Namakkal, the country’s hub of eggs is Rs 4.74.

In fact, there are a few supermarkets that sell eggs at whopping price of Rs 7 per piece. As the supply is less and demand is huge, the prices have got raised, said a shop owner.

One of the wholesale retailers in Jaffarkhanpet says since April this year, the egg prices have been eventually increasing. These will furthermore uptick, he adds.

A resident in Adambakkam says she used to buy eggs for Rs 3.50 per piece, but now it has raised up to Rs 5 per piece, thus making it difficult to buy as often as we need!

However, there are many hotel and eatery owners who say they have not increased price of boiled eggs or omelettes as they fear of disappointing and losing many customers. When the trend keeps continuing, the rates of these items may be raised, says one of the eatery owners here in Chennai.
