What is Karthigai Deepam?
Karthigai Deepam is a very popularly celebrated Hindu festivals. The Tamil-speaking Hindus prominently celebrate the eve. It is based on the Tamil Solar Calendar that the exact date of Karthigai Deepam is fixed annually. This usually falls during the Tamil month of Karthigai when the Karthigai Nakshatra is found at the time of Ratrimana. Karthigai Deepam is the eve of coinciding of Karthigai Nakshatra with Pournami during Karthigai month.

Usually, the Karthigai Deepam celebration in Thiruvannamalai Arunachaleshwara Swamy Temple is called the Karthigai Brahmotsavam. This is a very significant celebration taking place annually. In this temple, the Karthigai Deepam is kept lit for 10 long days. As the beginning of the celebration, Dwajarohanam is performed during Uthiraadam Nakshatra. In general, the Uthiradam Nakshatram prevails ahead of 10 days prior to the main Karthigai Deepam.
Misconception with Bharani Deepam
Generally, people misconceive Karthigai Deepam and Bharani Deepam. The latter is the ritual performed for the beginning of Karthigai Deepam. Usually, Bharani Deepam is observed ahead of sunrise at about 04.00 a.m. This usually falls one day ahead or on the same day of Karthigai Deepam. This Bharani Deepam is lit in the temple premises when the Bharani Nakshtra prevails. In general, at 4 a.m., the Bharani Deepam is lit.
Karthigai Deepam is usually lit after sunset out of the flame extracted from Bharani Deepam. This flame will be taken to the hill top during the evening and the Karthigai Maha Deepam will be lit.
