As a move to relieve passengers out of getting stranded in trains in the long hours of travel, a new technology is likely to be introduced by the Chennai Metro Rail with which they can control trains at remote location and get the problem fixed within a few minutes.
As per Chennai Metro Rail Limited officials, an asset management system is likely to be introduced in trains for solving the snag issue right from the control room.
When a train halts at a location because of any kind of failure or technical issue in the train, rather than opting to go all the way to the location of the train, we can gain access to data at remote locations (control room) and resolve the issue. Instead of taking about half an hour or one hour, with this new system, it will be possible to resolve within 5 or 10 minutes. This eliminates the need for sending a person. We can instruct the train operator and get the problem resolved, said an official.
Real-time data access
According to officials, with this system, we can gain access to the data from anywhere. Even if you are at one end of the world, you can gain access to the data and get the problem resolved if you simply know the User ID and password.
This system will obtain all details including train parameters and give away alerts in real-time right when the train is functioning. These shall be sent out to the depot maintenance server, said the official.
Tender notifications are forwarded and contracts shall soon be finalized in about 6 months period. Shortly, a system prototype will be ready and in a few months, the system shall be installed in trains.
As of now, there are about 10 to 15 trains. The software shall be introduced in all the 42 trains belonging to the phase-1 project though. Hence, the passengers can largely benefit out of it.
The overall estimate of the system and cost of installation are however not sure.
