All thanks to the depression which has now strengthened into a deep depression over Comorin area, around 170 km southeast of Kanyakumari. The system would continue to move in favourable weather conditions in west-northwest direction and is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm today.

If formed, the cyclone would be named as ‘Ockhi’ and would also be the first tropical storm of the season to develop in Arabian Sea.  Following is the expected track of the potential cyclonic storm.

Though the system is far away from North Tamil Nadu but peripherals of the system is affecting the weather over the region. Moist winds have been blowing Chennai and nearby areas, leading to Monsoon rains over the region.

At present also, Chennai has been witnessing drizzling since early morning hours. Rain bearing clouds have been hovering over the city and we can expect good spells of rains to start lashing Chennai soon.

According to Skymet Weather, intense convective clouds are seen over the city at present. With this, we can expect mainly moderate rains over the city, with few heavy spells as well.

In fact, more spells of on and off moderate to heavy rains are expected throughout the day. However, weathermen predict that rains would reduce thereafter as the weather system would move away towards Arabian Sea.
