5th December 2016  
The then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalitha took her last breath today. She served as the General Secretary of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, AIADMK. She got admitted with Apollo Hospital, Chennai with complaints of acute dehydration and infection. Following a sudden cardiac arrest on 4th December 2016, she took her last breath on the following day, the 5th December when the hospital authorities officially declared her death with an official announcement.

8th December 2016
Today, renowned journalist and actor Cho S Ramaswamy took his last breath after long illness at the age 82. He is a multifaceted personality and has served as a lawyer, journalist, actor, political interlocutor and commentator. He served as the editor of famous political magazine called Thuglak.
 
9th December 2016
Today was the day the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India had imposed a ban on using newspapers to wrap and pack food items. All the states and Union territories were requested with an advisory notice, and instructed the commissioners of food safety to cease newspaper usage for serving or packing or storing food products.

12th December 2016
In Chennai, the cyclone Vardah made a landfall on 12th December. This was stronger than the landfall about 50 years ago. It was back on 28th November 1966 that the last such landfall was experienced in the country. In this cyclone, over 10 people were dead and more than 258 trees got uprooted across Chennai.

15th December 2016
Today was the launch of Lucky Grahak Yojana for encouraging customers and Digi Dhan Vyapar Yojana to make digital payments. The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) made this launch.

22nd December 2016
Approval was given to a draft ordinance for empowering states and let industries give out workers wages digitally via direct bank transfer or through cheque. This is an initiative taken to encourage cashless transactions.

24th December 2016
New passport rules were rolled out from the Union Ministry of External Affairs, amending the Passport Rules, 1980 so as to streamline and ease passport issuing process on the whole. This new rule shall catalyze and ease the entire process of passport delivery and aid single mothers and orphaned.

26th December 2016
Twitter Seva was launched by the Union Ministry of External Affairs for communicating with the citizens in the country and abroad, tourists and business travelers so as to obtain speedy resolution of visa and passport queries.

BHIM - Bharat Interface for Money – a UPI base mobile payment application was launched on this day by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
