Chennai rains to remain light, to intensify by Dec 5

The city of Chennai has recorded heavy rains on November 30 and December 1. These rains were due to the cyclone that intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and crossed Tamil Nadu and Kerala. As of now, the system has strengthened into a very severe cyclonic storm and is centered over Lakshadweep area and adjoining Southeast Arabian Sea.
As the system has moved away from the region and no other significant weather system is present over Tamil Nadu, no significant rain activity was recorded in the past 24 hours and even is not foreseen during the next 24 hours.
In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Meenambakkam observatory saw a mere 0.4 mm of rainfall, while no rains were seen at the Nungambakkam observatory.
Rains will once again pick up pace by December 4 night as the low-pressure area which is over Andaman Sea is expected to move towards Tamil Nadu due to which heavy rains will be seen over the region.
Sky conditions are likely to remain cloudy with possibilities of light rain and thundershowers in parts. Day will remain windy.
As per Skymet Weather, rains are likely to once again pick up pace by December 5. This could be credited to the well-marked low pressure area over South Andaman Sea and adjoining Strait of Malacca that is likely to intensify into a depression and move towards Coastal Tamil Nadu. Thus, heavy rain will be seen over the region during December 5 to 7.
